Wayne and Ellen PattonThe interest in Bible Storying or Chronological Bible Storytelling is growing in the United States. It is exciting way to share the truths of God, yet many of our Pastors and Church Leaders are skeptical of this teaching method. The irony is that in some form, Bible Storying has been used in the mission field for many years and even in this country before the common practice of reading, radio and television, the sharing stories from the Bible with adults was a common event. Times have changed and many in the country are well educated and to sophisticated to listen to Bible Stories. Or are they?

The term Bible Storying covers a wide range of types of storytelling. There is Chronological Bible Storying that is becoming popular in overseas mission work and where missionaries are trying to provide people groups with a Oral Bible. Then Bible Storytelling typical used in children's ministries and includes drama and can be very creative. We are promoting a version of Bible Storying that is some what in between these two extremes.

The goal of Bible Storying is to tell the Biblical stories as a story in a very relevant and interesting manner yet keep to core of the story as it is present in the Bible. As you know there are a wide range of Bible translations available in the Christian book store with each catering to a specific audience. This is the same with Bible Storying, the stories are told and catered to the audience they are being told to. To make the story relevant, words and phrases are used that are easily understood by the target audience. It is common in a story to only included some of the details of the story as it is written. Leaving out some of the details does not change the story and is normally done so for clarity and time.

The stories we are using are not replacing scripture nor are they being declared as the inspired Word Of God. These are stories that are crafted from the scriptures to be told for Evangelism, Discipleship and Mentoring purposes. Our hope is that as people hear these stories, it will create interest in the Word of God, because these are stories are inspired by the Holy Spirit and contain truths that cut like a two edge sword.

We would like to challenge you to lean a few stories and commit to telling them. As you share these stories you will notice the difference as people, both believer and non believer, hear you tell God's story as a story with such attention you will want to continue the effort.
